A Russian citizen who was the subject of a European arrest warrant issued at the request of Europol was stopped and detained at Schiphol airport at the end of last August, authorities have just made it known.

The man, believed to be in his forties, was boarding on a flight to a destination outside the European Union. He was flagged by border control after Dutch police databases matched his identity against Europol's list of wanted persons, Dutch police confirmed.

Officers from the border police unit at Schiphol held the man and handed him over to the Public Prosecution Service. He is suspected of involvement in cross-border fraud, and further arrests are not being ruled out, a spokesman said.

The man was taken to the court complex in Haarlem, where a judge will decide on his further detention pending a possible extradition request from the member state that issued the warrant. The authorities have not released his name or other details.

The arrest follows closer cooperation between Dutch border police and Europol, whose headquarters are based in The Hague, on tracking suspects linked to organised crime across Europe.
